Parasites Passing Genomes

Scientists at the University of Rochester have discovered the entire genome of the bacterial parasite Wolbachia inside its host's DNA. In terms of evolution, this means that genetic traits could be passed on far more quickly than once thought. Wolbachia infect about 70% of invertebrate species, finding their way into the host's sex cells, whereby it is inherited into new generations. The Wolbachia cells actually co-evolve with its host's. So far, this kind of complete genome inheritance is only seen in insects, but I'm hoping that one day a walk through the backyard in my bare feet may lead to my children inheriting deadly ringworm powers.
